Opposing the spirit = Eternal separation

In this portion of the discussion we will go a little deeper into what it means to walk in the spirit, and what it means to do the opposite.  As we stated in the first post, the opposite of walking in the spirit, is to walk in, or fulfill the desires of the flesh. As we also pointed out previously, there are specific desires of the flesh that qualify as being in opposition to the spirit.

Let’s take a moment to distinguish between normal everyday desires of the flesh, and those desires which are in opposition to the spirit.  We will break each one of these on the list down in future posts, but for now lets just relist them.

Here are those desires or tasks, which are outlined in Galatians 5:19-21.  “Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in the past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.” (Gal 5:19-21 KJV)

Now, let’s talk briefly about what these things that made the list are on the list for, and what makes them opposing to the spirit.

We need to introduce Ephesians 4:23-24 here first to set up the full scope of this subject matter, since in order to walk in the spirit we must first have our spirit renewed.  “And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. ”

Let us now begin breaking down the subject, here is a list of things that describe the situation of an individual who does not have a renewed spirit. The things on this list are also found in Ephesians 4.

The person is “tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine…” (Eph 4:14 KJV).

The person walks “in the vanity of their mind…” (Eph 4:17 KJV).

The person has their “understanding darkened…” and are “alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them…” (Eph 4:18 KJV).

The person is spiritually disabled because of “the blindness of their heart…” (Eph 4:18 KJV).

The person is also “past feeling…” (Eph 4:19 KJV).

So, let’s put this all together, and look at why these things actively functioning in the life of someone would clearly be in opposition to the spirit.

The person is tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, walks in the vanity of their mind, has their understanding darkened, are alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, is spiritually disabled because of the blindness of their heart, and is past feeling.

The things that have just been described are all created in the life of an individual when that individual is walking in the flesh.

One thing that is very important when it comes to walking in the flesh must be brought to the surface here.  It is those who are under the Law, that are locked into this pattern of defeat because they are not empowered by the Spirit to walk in the spirit.  They are judged by the Law, condemned by the Law, and fulfill the results of being under the bondage of the Law.  However, there is an alternative for that person, there is a way out of the bondage.  “This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.” (Gal 5:16)

It is freedom from the Law that gives us the opportunity to walk in the spirit.  Therefore, on the next post we will get into how we can be made free from the Law.
